What is
an Internet Service Provider?
| An Internet Service
Provider (ISP) provides you with a phone number which your
modem dials to connect your computer to the Internet via
the telephone network. The number your modem calls is
usually toll free. To connect to the Internet, your computer and software will need to be set up correctly. Some ISPs send out a starter kit containing a CD, while others take you through the process over the phone. Instructions given on installation disks or over the phone should be straightforward, but if you don't understand what the person at the other end is saying, then you should ask for an explanation. Your computer connects to the Internet through the phone network. ISPs try to provide enough lines for customers to connect. If they don't, you may get an engaged signal or an error message and no connection with be made. |
